This was my fun and unprofessional data analysis from 2017.
In August 2017 an informal poll was conducted on a Polish facebook group of cartography enthusiasts called Mapawka. Someone posted a blank map of Europe (that also include surrounding countries in Africa and Asia) and asked about the opinions about each country. About 168 filled maps were uploaded to the comment section, some were just trolling, the vast majority was honest. I was so fascinated by the results that I downloaded each and every map from that comment section and meticulously wrote down the opinions into the spreadsheet.
This was the final compilation that I published in 25th August 2017:
Please show your opinion about countries in Europe by filling each county with colors from the legend:
The people that took part in the poll are definitely not an average sample of the society. They were the members of the facebook group dedicated for maps and topics related to them, especially politics, economy, history and demography, so that's the group of people actively interested and above average knowledgable in those subjects. Out of thousands of the group members (about 48 thousands in 2025, I don't remember how many was there in 2017, but it was always a popular group) the vast majority of whom just watch and comment the maps, only about 160+ of them were motivated enough to manually download the template, paint each country with any image editing app and upload it into the comment section of the post that wasn't pinned and needed to be find between many maps posted everyday.
Every map that got at least one country of Europe filled with a proper color from the legend was eligible to be counted, when some or most countries were left grey or were cropped, they were counted as neutral. The map didn't have to be the same as the template, as long as the colors were somewhat right. I counted all opinions by my eyes and flawless country recognition so even oddities like separate regions of a country (most often countries of the United Kingdom were treated differently) or merged counties could be taken into account, but on the special category.
Most of the time Poland was marked as 'Homeland', there were instances of other countries as well as Poland with stripe pattern of both 'Homeland' and other opinion color. It was counted too.
Comments were a mix of surprise by the results.
Given the unrestricted nature of the poll, as anybody could draw any kind of map and upload it as an image, a lot of people marked countries in various ways, the most commonly by painting various regions of a single country with different colors.
